The Boolean Search feature helps you construct complex search queries. It uses the same search operators described in Search Syntax, combined with special conditions to perform searches on the properties (metadata) of items.

The Boolean Search dialog is used to create Boolean search queries.

To perform an advanced boolean search:

  1. On the Search menu, select Advanced Boolean Search. The Boolean Search dialog opens.

  2. From the Search Scope list, select the item to search on. For example, select File Part. Based on this selection, the application updates the properties displayed in the Filter Selection list.

  3. From the Filter Selection list, select a property to search on. For example, select Name.
Based on this selection, the application updates the conditions displayed.

  4. Select a condition, and enter the search term in the Value field. For example, select the condition Starts With, and enter C in the Value field. This condition finds file parts whose names begin with the letter C.
As you construct this query, the condition appears in the Query criteria section, and a search expression is built in the Query text section.

  5. Select the Minus  icon to delete this condition, or select the Plus icon to add another condition.

  6. From the Filter Selection list, select another property to search on. For example, select Media Type.
Based on this selection, the application updates the conditions displayed.

  7. Select one of the following ‌conditions:

    • Select the  icon and then select the media type—for example, select INSERT.

    • From the list, select a condition, and enter a text search for the name of the media type. For example, select the condition Is exactly, and enter the term INSERT.

As you construct this query, the condition is listed below the first condition in the Query criteria section.

  8. In the Query criteria section, individual conditions need to be joined by search operators:

    • From the and/or list, select the AND or OR operators.

    • Select the NOT operator check box.

    • To include the parenthesis operator, double-click the opening and closing parentheses columns.

For more information about search operators, refer to Table: Search Operators.
As you join individual conditions with search operators, a search expression is built in the Query text section.

  9. Select OK to perform the search.
The search results open in the List pane.

  10. Continue with Customizing Search Results.
