The iManage Platform organizes your firm's work using a small set of core objects: Clients, workspaces, folders, documents, and emails. This page defines each term and explains how the objects relate to one another.
Client
A client is a collection of workspaces that belong to the same client organization. Every workspace belongs to exactly one client.
Workspace (also called a matter)
A workspace, also called a matter depending on your configuration, is a container for the folders, documents, and emails related to a specific client engagement or project.
Folder
A folder organizes documents and emails within a workspace. Folders can contain other folders.
Document
A document is a file, such as a Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, or PDF file, stored in a workspace or in a folder within a workspace.
An email is a message stored in a workspace or in a folder within a workspace. Documents and emails are managed in similar ways, but they're distinct object types.
How the objects relate
Client: The top-level grouping. Contains one or more workspaces.
Workspace (or matter): Contains folders, documents, and emails for a specific engagement or project.
Folder: Can contain more folders, to any depth, as well as documents and emails.
Document
Email
A document or email can live directly in a workspace, or in any folder nested within it.
