Introduction

This chapter provides information on important, or key, iManage Work concepts required to understand and to efficiently administer an iManage Work system. Each topic introduces concepts, such as containers and documents, or understanding the relations between roles and privileges. The topics also introduce and define important terms.

This documentation is intended for iManage Work system administrators. This introduces basic key concepts, and provides direction or material for additional detail. These key concepts are a good starting place to learn about them if you are new or unfamiliar with the iManage Work system administration. When possible, the concepts are linked to procedures, such as those than can be performed in the iManage Control Center.

The following topics are available.

Types of system administrators

Throughout the documentation, two types of system administrators are referenced: iManage Work system administrator and network system administrator. Each maintains and regulates controls within their own system. They cannot directly affect the other system but must frequently coordinate with each other to assure proper access to resources. For example, an iManage Work system administrator manages tools that may add users to the iManage Work application from an Active Directory, those users generally are added to the company network first by a network system administrator.

iManage Work system administrator. iManage Work system administrators manage users and policies for iManage Work. They can add, activate/deactivate, and modify users, set their access to content, and control security access to containers and documents. They are members at least one iManage Work administration group, such as tier 1, tier 2, and NRTADMIN. Each group allowing additional privileges. The NRTADMIN group has the most access to all items and settings. iManage Work system administrators are unrelated to network system administrator and cannot manage network controls or configurations outside of iManage Work.

Network system administrator. Network system administrators plan, set up, and maintain computer networks for their company. This includes monitoring the network performance, ensuring its security and integrity, troubleshooting networking problems, implementing periodic network and system upgrades, installing network related software, and making sure user's computers have reliable network access. They maintain network users and can add, delete, activate/deactivate users, and set users' permissions to network resources. Network system administrators are unrelated to iManage system administrators and do not regulate iManage processes other than perhaps installing and updating the iManage application itself.
