The application lets you duplicate the properties (metadata) of existing file parts to create new volumes. This results in faster data entry as it leverages existing data, and so avoids duplication of effort.

During file part creation, in the New File Part or New File Part from Template dialog, the properties are duplicated based on the precedence outlined in Precedence for Duplicating File Part Properties.

You can also select the properties to copy when creating the duplicate file part.

To duplicate the properties of an existing file part:

  1. Search or browse for the file part you want to duplicate.

  2. Right-click the file part, and select Duplicate File Part. Alternatively, from the Actions menu, select Duplicate File Part. The New File Part dialog opens with fields prepopulated based on the precedence outlined in Precedence for Duplicating File Part Properties.

NOTE: If the file part to duplicate is created from a template, the New File Part from Template dialog opens.

  1. Use the File Selection section to browse and select where to duplicate the file part.

  2. If necessary, modify the information in any of the available fields. Refer to Creating File Parts.

  3. To create a batch of duplicates of the file part, enter the number of file parts in the Number of records to create field. Alternatively, to duplicate the file part without closing the New File Part dialog, select Save and New. This lets you create additional duplicates of the file part without opening the New File Part dialog again.

  4. Select OK.

Precedence for Duplicating File Part Properties

When a file part is duplicated from another file part, the application inherits file part properties in the following order. If a valid value is found in one of the following sources, that value is used. If no value is found, the next source is checked for a valid value.

  1. User Locked Field: The properties previously locked in the New File Part or New File Part from Template dialog.

  2. Source File Part: The properties of the file part that's being duplicated.

  3. Parent File Part Template: The properties specified in the template of the parent file part (that is, the file part in which the duplicate is created‌).

  4. Parent File Part: The properties of the file part in which the duplicate is created‌.

NOTE: In all the above cases, you can manually override the inherited properties.
