In the previous versions of iManage Work Desktop for Windows, when you sent an .nrl link, it displayed only the document name with the .nrl extension. The link sent did not provide any information like document type, document version, or document number.  So, when you shared the .nrl links for different document types of the same document, the recipient had to select each link to open the relevant document type.

For example, if you sent the links for Separation Notice Template (AZ).docx and Separation Notice Template (AZ).pdf, the .nrl link shared was Separation Notice Template (AZ).nrl for both the document types. Hence, to open the Microsoft Word document, the recipient had to select each link until the word document opened.

However, from iManage Work Desktop for Windows 10.4.0 onwards, when you send a .nrl link, it uses the format defined in iwAttachmentFileNameFormat configuration setting and is identical to the format followed when sending a document as an attachment, that is, the .nrl link now displays the document name, document version, document number, and document type with the .nrl extension. For more information about the configuration setting, refer to imWorkOptions.xml section in the iManage Work Desktop for Windows Customization Guide

For example, if you send the links for Separation Notice Template (AZ).docx and Separation Notice Template (AZ).pdf, the nrl links are now sent as Separate Notice Template (AZ)(67823.2).docx.nrl and Separate Notice Template (AZ)(67825.4).pdf.nrl instead of just the document name. Hence, to open the word document, the recipient need not select each link and can directly open the document by selecting the Separate Notice Template (AZ)(67823.2).docx.nrl link.

NOTE:

  • NRL links cannot be customized to include the following custom date, time, and boolean fields:
    • imProfileCustom21

  • NRL links do not support the following characters: / \ : * " <> | ‘;’,‘\t’,‘#’,‘&’,‘@’,‘,’. If the document contains any of the following characters, it is replaced by an underscore (_).
