Overview

With teams distributed across time zones, an explicit document checkout model limits efficiency. There are several limitations to an explicit checkout model:

  • People must manage a schedule for editing the document.

  • When collaboration is necessary, emailing documents provides a simple delivery mechanism but leaves the firm at the risk of potential data leaks.

  • Merging changes is a manual and time-consuming process full of risk.

Co-authoring lets users take a fresh approach to working collaboratively on a document. With iManage Work Next Generation Co-authoring, you may do the following in iManage Work at cloudimanage.com:

  • View and edit files: You can view and edit files using:

    • Microsoft 365 for the web,

    • Microsoft 365 applications for the desktop (Microsoft Windows and macOS devices),

    • Microsoft 365 applications for iOS, Microsoft Word for iOS, Microsoft Excel for iOS, or Microsoft PowerPoint for iOS.

  • Save files: If you open files that are saved to iManage Work at cloudimanage.com using:

    • Microsoft 365 for the web,

    • Microsoft 365 applications for the desktop (Microsoft Windows and macOS devices),

    • Microsoft 365 applications for iOS, Microsoft Word for iOS, Microsoft Excel for iOS, or Microsoft PowerPoint for iOS and make edits.
You can directly save your edits without having to install iManage Work clients such as iManage Work Desktop for Windows and iManage Work Desktop for Mac.

  • Edit files as co-author: You can co-author files with other users in your organization who also have an active iManage Work account ID. You don't need to send an invite to start co-authoring.
Users who have an active iManage Work account ID in your organization can start or join a co-authoring session by using the iManage Work Next Generation Co-authoring menu options.
They can also use the new iManage entry under the Add a Place option in the Microsoft 365 applications for the desktop (Microsoft Windows and macOS devices), Microsoft 365 applications for iOS, Microsoft Word for iOS, Microsoft Excel for iOS, or Microsoft PowerPoint for iOS.

  • Work from any device: You may open a Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file from any device that can access Microsoft 365 for the web, or the Microsoft 365 applications for the desktop (Microsoft Windows and macOS devices), or Microsoft 365 applications for iOS, or Microsoft Word for iOS, Microsoft Excel for iOS, or Microsoft PowerPoint in iOS, in any order. You can also edit the same file on multiple devices at the same time.

  • Work with legacy files: When you want to open a legacy file stored in a binary format (for example, .DOC, .XLS, or .PPT), iManage converts the file to an XML-based Microsoft 365 format (for example, .DOCX, .XLSX, or .PPTX) and saves it as a new version in iManage Work on cloudimanage.com. You can then co-author the document.
