As an administrator for your organization, you must install GnuPG to encrypt data to enhance privacy and security.

Installing GnuPG

To install GnuPG on your device, do the following:

  • For macOS

    1. Select Launchpad > Terminal.

    2. Enter brew install gnupg and then press the Return key.
      GnuPG is installed on your Mac.

  • For Windows
    To download and install GnuPG, go to https://www.gnupg.org/download/ to refer installation for Windows and refer to the GnuPG BINARY RELEASES section.

Generate the key pair

After you install GnuPG, you must now generate the key pair.

  1. If you're using macOS, open Terminal.
    For a Windows device, open Command Prompt as an administrator.

  2. Run the gpg --full-generate-key command.

  3. When prompted, select or enter values of the following:

    1. Key type: Select the RSA and RSA (default).

    2. Key size: Enter the key size. The recommended size is 4096 bits.

    3. Expiration: Select a validity period or set it to never expire.

    4. User ID: Enter your name and email address.

    5. Passphrase: Set a strong passphrase to protect your private key.

INFO:

  • The User ID and Email address used to generate the key pair will be used to list the public keys also.

  • The Passphrase set to generate the key pair will be used to decrypt PGP-encrypted fields.

Listing Public key

To list the public key:

  1. If you're using macOS, open Terminal.
    For a Windows device, open Command Prompt as an administrator.

  2. Run one of the following commands:

    • gpg --list-keys

    • gpg --export -a
      alice@example.com

Replace the email address with the Email ID used to generate the key pair.
The public key is listed.

Listing Private key

To list the private key:

  1. If you're using macOS, open Terminal.
    For a Windows device, open Command Prompt as an administrator.

  2. Run gpg --list-secret-keys to display the ID, for example—C9621D5191424BDE21A01F3F2DEF041012B48E97

  3. Run gpg --armor --export-secret-key C9621D5191424BDE21A01F3F2DEF041012B48E97
    NOTE: Use the ID generated in Step 2.

  4. Enter the Passphrase used to generate the key pair.
    The Private key is listed and displayed.
