Installing iManage Work Desktop for Windows using iManage auto installer

iManage recommends that you install iManage Work clients using the iManage auto installer which automatically downloads and installs iManage Agent Services and iManage Work Desktop for Windows based on Microsoft Office bitness. This option has Auto Updates enabled offering you the benefit of staying up-to-date with the latest features, enhancements, and/or bug fixes that are periodically released by iManage. Updates are seamlessly installed with minimal user intervention. As an IT administrator, you can control, configure, and easily deploy latest updates. 1

Starting the installation from iManage Help Center

  1. Visit the iManage Help Center and download iManage Work Desktop for Windows Auto Update Installer package.

  2. Perform Steps 3 and 4 mentioned in the following section (Starting the installation from the iManage Work web application).

Starting the installation from the iManage Work web application

  1. Sign into iManage Work (web application). Notice the following iManage Auto Updates banner:


    If you dismiss the banner, you will not be shown the banner again even if your computer does not have the iManage Work Desktop for Windows application. However, anytime later, you can select your profile picture and select the option to install the application.

  2. Select Download iManage Work for Windows. The iManageInstaller.exe file is downloaded to your desktop, and the following screen appears:


    • To install the application, you do not have to be an administrator on your machine. However, your account needs to have privileges to install the software only the first time it is installed using the iManage banner. Once iManage Work Desktop for Windows is installed with elevated privileges using the iManage banner, any subsequent automatic updates are executed using the same elevated privileges, allowing even the users with restricted installation privileges to update the software.

    • Administrators can control whether end-users should get access to the iManage Installer through the Auto Updates banner or any other source. You can choose to display or hide this banner.1

  3. Select Close and then run iManageInstaller.exe. The iManage Installer Setup screen appears.

    This screen is pre-populated with the iManage Update Server location where the latest iManage software updates are hosted. This location is configurable if you want to set up your own update server.2

  4. Select Install. iManage Installer initiates the download and installation process for iManage Work Desktop for Windows. The following screen appears:

    You may have to wait for a few minutes for the entire process to complete. It is an automated process and does not require any intervention (besides Windows confirmation to install updates). After the installation is successfully complete, the What's New page is launched in your default browser. It provides information on the new features, enhancements, and/or bug fixes in the latest update.

    In addition, the following notification appears in your Windows system tray (bottom-right corner of your desktop screen).

    iManage Work Desktop for Windows notifies you when the application updates are available. You can easily identify the component(s) to be updated by selecting the Settings menu and then selecting About. The components that need to updated have a blue dot next to their names.

You can also check for the updates manually and install them using the Settings menu in the iManage Work Agent. In addition, based on the configuration supported by your IT administrator, you can choose the desired channel (for example, RELEASE). A channel determines which products and versions should be installed on your desktop. It is recommended to disable the Auto Updates feature on Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH) environments, such as, Citrix terminal server or Windows machines that host multiple users. When disabled, no option related to Auto Updates is displayed/visible in iManage Work Agent. For more information, see Turning off Auto Updates .

You can specify whether updates should be automatically downloaded and kept ready for you before you select Install. To enable or disable this feature, perform the following steps:

  1. Open the system tray.

  2. Select the iManage Work Agent icon and:

    1. Select the gear icon.

    2. From the drop-down list, select Update settings.

    Alternatively, right-click the iManage Work Agent icon and select Update Settings. The Update Settings screen appears.

  3. Select or clear the Automatically download updates option. By default, the option is selected, which ensures that if there are any updates, they are automatically downloaded to your desktop even before you select Install. This eliminates the download wait time and provides a seamless, quicker installation experience.


    Administrators can control this option for their end-users using a registry setting, Auto Download Update.3

    Additionally, the iManage Work Agent provides the ability to switch between update channels. Depending on how it is configured in your environment, you may be able to see and select different update channels, to allow you to pilot new releases ahead of all the users in your company. To use this feature, select the gear icon, select Update Settings, and select the desired update channel from the Version drop-down list. Changing the channel automatically starts the relevant software updates download process.

    When you change Update Settings, the iManageUpdateManagerService log file, located in the %ProgramData%\iManage\AgentServices\Logs folder logs that the Auto Updates settings have changed, and states the setting value and the name of the changed channel.

Previously, iManage Auto Updates ran in the user context and if users did not have permissions to install software on their machine, updates could not be successfully invoked and installed. In 10.2.4 and later, the iManage Update Manager enables any installer to run with adequate local system permissions for completing most installations. This allows the invocation of installations through iManage Auto Updates that can successfully complete even if users do not have elevated privileges on their machine to install software. As a result, configuration files and settings for iManage Update Manager are moved to locations that do not belong to a particular user but are shared across user accounts on a machine.

If the files are downloaded by:

  • imanageupdater: The update.ini and updateinfo.json files are now downloaded to the %ProgramData%\iManage\AgentServices\Configs directory instead of the %AppData\iManage\Installer directory.

  • updatemanagerservice: The update.ini and updateinfo.json files are now downloaded to the %ProgramData%\iManage\AgentServices\CentralizedConfigs directory instead of the %AppData\iManage\Installer directory.

Additional information:

  • The update.ini and updateinfo.json files that are downloaded from the server to %ProgramData%\iManage\AgentServices\CentralizedConfigs override the local versions of the files in %ProgramData%\iManage\AgentServices\Configs.

  • Updates are now downloaded to the %ProgramData%\iManage\Installer\Updates directory instead of the %LocalAppData%\iManage\Installer\Updates directory.

  • The Selected Update Channel registry setting is moved to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\iManage\AgentServices\AutoUpdate from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\iManage\AgentServices\AutoUpdate.

  • The Auto Download Update registry setting is moved to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\iManage\AgentServices\AutoUpdate from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\iManage\AgentServices\AutoUpdate.

  • The UPDATESERVERPATH registry setting is moved to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\iManage\AgentServices\AutoUpdate from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\iManage\AgentServices\AutoUpdate.
